I don’t really like being “controversial,” but I felt like I needed to say something about this. It’s so strange reading about all of this in India. No one really thinks of the BILLIONS of other people in the world who need justice too… Anyways, I woke up this morning and started reading LUmination’s article about the movement among students at Lipscomb with Occupy Nashville in the name of Christianity. You can read it here: http://www.luminationnetwork.com/2011/10/30/lipscomb-student-occupy-nashville-participant-speaks-out-after-arrest/ Here’s my response to this specific article:
It honestly makes me sad. People are in a sense being led astray by this, because as Katie Beth puts it: “Protesting is very sexy.” People (even myself at times) want to be seen on the front lines doing heroic stuff in the name of Christianity. We want it so badly that we quickly jump on any train we see that slightly looks like our mission in Jesus Christ. Here probably comes my most controversial statement: Occupy Wall Street does not coincide with the mission of Jesus Christ. They are not “same-same” as people say here in India for being “alike.” It’s so dangerous to stamp Jesus on a movement like that. Ahh.. why do mere college students (including me again) think they have enough wisdom and knowledge of politics to KNOW the outcome of the policy changes they are asking for? We don’t. We simply don’t. I’m a college student too at Lipscomb, a bible major, I know what it is like to have an inflated sense of my knowledge and wisdom that isn’t necessarily reality. Sometimes, it comes back to bite me in the butt.
All I know is that I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His ways above ANY other way. And regardless, whether the government context in which I live looks like capitalism or more like something else… God’s call is the same. He is going to hold ME accountable for how I followed the ways of Jesus. I’m going to make personal sacrifices out of my own wealth to give to the poor and needy… because that is what my Lord calls ME to. That is something I can trust in—in light of my naivety and immaturity… Not in a plan devised by mere men, but by God through Jesus Christ.
